Waste

There is only little waste recycled or processed, so that new products can be made again. Some companies and foundations have started doing this about five years ago. Part of the waste problem is solved by recycling more waste.

In Suriname, most garbage is dumped. A large part of the waste from the districts of Paramaribo,Wanica and Commewijne is deposited in the landfill Ornamibo, about 15 km South of Paramaribo. In the other districts there are also small landfills, both legal and illegal. Not a lot of waste is recycled.

In 2019 197,430 m3 of waste was disposed. The most common waste is household waste, followed by industrial and agricultural waste (see table 13.1 and graph 13.1).

Garbage collection transportation

The most common truck used for garbage collection is the private Crush Load Lorry with a 18 ton capacity (see table 13.2).

Amazona Recycling Company35 N.V. (AmReCo) is an integrated recycling company that delivers their contribution to a sustainable and healthy environment in Suriname, through to industrial processing of used plastic (pet, hdpe), cardboard and paper and also sells these products to third parties.

Foundation Support Recycling Suriname (SuReSur) placed a total of 450 collection bins in all districts in the periode 2015 and 2016 at strategic locations where plastic waste is collected and provides transport to a recycling company. SuReSur works closely with AmReCo.

The different recycled materials that are exported by Amreco:

• Lables of bottles and cardboards
• HDPE (hi density polyethylene) flakes- various used soap, shampoo, juice and milk bottles.
• LDPE en HDPE films, various plastic wraps and bags
• Petbales, various (pet) bottles, water and soda plastic bottles
• Petflakes and preforms, clean unused pet bottles and petbottles preforms.
• Used newspapers and office paper
• Various cardboard
• Tetra pak-package from milk and juice
• PVC
• Glass

In 2019 AmReCo exported mostly cardboard. In the period 2015-2019 the export of recycled material decreased by 36.1% (see table 13.6 and graph 13.3).

In 2019 is gerecycled materiaal geëxporteerd naar de volgende vijf landen: Nederland, Taiwan, Malaisa , Equador en Peurto Cortes. In 2018 is gerecycled materiaal geëxporteerd naar de volgende elf landen: Nederland, Duitsland Spanje, Thailand, Trinidad & Tobago, Vietnam, India, USA, Hongkong, Taiwan and Peurto Cortes(zie tabel 13.7)De LDPE/HDPE film wordt niet gexporteerd , maar lokaal verkocht aan het bedrijf Smart nice Recycling Carribean.
